Antique pine carpenter’s work box made around 1900. Beautifully made, as you’d expect from a carpenter; they’d want to show off their skills with this (barely) mobile chest for their tools. The inside is lined and jointed and there are removable sections with drawers and cubby holes for various bits and pieces. In fact there were still some antique tools in there 🙂
I particularly like the shaped mahogany insets in the inside front, presumably to reinforce the lock area.

Condition is fairly good; structurally it’s sound though the bottom has been replaced. There are plenty of chips and scratches on the outside, unsurprisingly; that’s all testament to its working life. Inside, some veneer is missing from the lid. The outside was finished in a black lacquer but we’ve hand stripped, sanded and waxed it. The result is a super colour with many small lacquer remnants; clean without having lost its age.
